Parks & Outdoor Recreation

Modern life can wear anybody down, and sometimes we need a place to just get away. Here, that place is often right outside your door. Whether it's a quiet hike in the woods, taking the dog for a long walk around a lake or the thrill of a rock climbing adventure, we've got many ways and locations to help you enjoy the great outdoors.

Bernheim Arboretum & Research Forest, a 14,000 acre nature preserve offers an abundance of outdoor experiences including hiking, biking, bird-watching, picnicking, fishing, three lakes, a "canopy treewalk" and educational nature programs. Jefferson Memorial Forest, minutes away from downtown Louisville, has more than 35 miles of hiking trails, a 5.5 acre lake and a welcome center with gift shop. Grayson County's Nolin Lake State Park has over 330 acres of rolling hills and lush green forest.

Kentucky's state park system is considered one of the best in the nation and Rough River Dam State Resort Park is a shining example, offering some of the finest opportunities for fishing and water sports in the state. Hardin County is not without its green space either, from Saunders Springs Nature Preserve to Freeman Lake Park outdoor concerts, hiking, fishing and picnicking are among the many activities you can enjoy. And that's just the beginning.

So cast a line, hit the trail, or just take a lazy seat under a big shade tree. You can enjoy all nature offers here in the Heartland. And if you're a sports lover, you couldn't find a better place. We've got golf courses, ball fields, indoor recreational facilities and more. To find Parks and Outdoor Recreation Areas in the region, visit our Resource Database.
